Man killed in Meherpur ‘gunfight’

A man was killed in what police called a gunfight between two gangs at Harabhanga village in Gangni upazila of Meherpur early Monday, reports UNB.

Police said the deceased Budu Ali, 30, son of late Zoyad Ali, and a resident of Pirtola village, was accused in several drugs-related cases.

Harendra Nath Sarker, officer-in-charge of Gangni police station, said a team from Pirtola police camp went to the spot after hearing gunshots.

"Police rescued Budu, wounded in the gunfight, and took him to Gangni Upazila Health Complex where the physicians pronounced him dead," Sarker said.

Police claimed that it was a gunfight between two groups of drug traders.

One kilogram of cannabis, 20 bottles of phensedyl and a one-shooter gun were seized from the site.

The law enforcement’s version of the incident, however, could not be verified independently as no version of the incident was available immediately either from any witness or from the victim’s family.
